Mirik is a picturesque tourist spot nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India. The name Mirik comes from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok meaning "place burnt by fire". You will pass by the famous Thurbo Tea Estate of Goodricke as well as several others like Gopaldhara. On the way you will also see a lot of orange orchards. Mirik is one of the most popular destinations among tourists.

Mirik lake is the central attraction of Mirik and this is where you are likely to spend most of your time. Mirik Lake is popularly known as the Samendu Lake. The distance from Darjeeling to Mirik lake is around 49 KM. The lake is around 1.25 KM long and is surrounded by chestnut, oak and maple trees. Boating and horse riding can be enjoyed here. The lake is at the lowest altitude in Mirik.

Far ahead towards north you can see the mountains, and on a clear day you can even get nice views of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks. There is a lovely 80-ft long arch footbridge across the center of the lake which joins the eastern bank with the western bank.

Itinerary

Start
Begin your tour with a pickup at 8 AM from your preferred location in Darjeeling, then start your adventure from Darjeeling to Mirik exploring scenic tea gardens and lovely mountain landscape
Stop 1
Jorphokri: This imperceptible place on a hill top has twin meres, surrounded by forest and offers magnificent views of Kanchenjunga. This is where you can see the rare lizard like creatures - the Himalayan Salamanders which were once considered extinct. Stake some minute at Jorpokhri soaking in the views and walking around the lakes and forests
Stop 2
Simana View Point: It is the Indo-Nepal border area, the road itself belongs to India and the viewing area falls in Nepal. But you can abundantly walk across over to get the views. An individual can see Maneybhanjan underneath and the beautiful mountains on a clear day. Can also see the narrow winding road leading to Sandakphu on the other side of the valley & the dazzling Kanchenjunga snow peaks. At Simana, you will find several small stalls - some selling tea & snacks, others chocolates and knick knacks
Stop 3
Pashupati Market: Outstanding market is about 1 KM walk from the border. You can either walk or take a Nepal taxi at the border to reach the main market. The market is full of imported electronic gadgets, jackets, perfumes & cosmetics, accessories and clothes
Stop 4
Gopal Dhara Tea Esate: Abeyant narrow winding downhill road descends by several thousand feet to a dale you will come across lovely landscapes full of tea gardens & several small round hillock formations with pine trees on top making it a picture perfect site where Gopaldhara Tea Estate is located. In essence an individual can walk down the isle through the tea gardens and reach a view point from where you get wonderful view of the gardens all around
Stop 5
Mirik Lake: Hummock town is located further 12 KM from Pashupati market and at an average altitude of 5,000 ft. Perch ahead the bank of the lake and relax. You can also do sailing in the lake (mostly paddle boats). Orwellian over the cambering footbridge and crossover to the other side (western bank) of the lake, pivot left and take the pavement through the dhupi woodlot and enjoy the nature. Nearby is a temple in the forest (known as Devi Sthan). Pony rides are also feasible around the lake and quite popular with children & adults
Stop 6
The Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is one of the prominent Buddhist centres in the region. The monastery is home to around 500 monks who participate in practising and sustaining the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. It also serves as a school teaching the principles of Buddhism. The monastery has a monastic college named Shedra. Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche established the monastery in 1984 as a retreat centre. On the request of disciples and natives, Rinpoche began accepting monks for training and the centre was transformed into a monastery. The activities of the monastery are under the control of Kyabje Bokar Khenchen Donyo Rinpoche
